Our Heritage &
Preservation Mission

We are committed to maintaining St Matthias’ Church as a place of gathering, reflection, and heritage. Through restoration and community engagement, we help secure its future as a local treasure and landmark in Richmond.
The Friends are deeply grateful to all donors and benefactors who have supported us since the first fundraisings to save the Spire in 1988. Special thanks go to Sir David Attenborough, Lady Hamwee, and members of the congregation—some no longer with us—including our first chairman, Piers Eley. Sir David has generously opened our Art Fairs and donated items for auction, while Piers was instrumental in arranging many memorable concerts. We hope to revive these events, bringing choirs and music back to fill St Matthias.
As an independent charitable organization (no 1054075), we work not only to preserve but also to enhance the church’s facilities, ensuring it remains a valuable resource for the community. Funds raised through bequests, donations, and events are reinvested into maintaining and improving the church and its surroundings.
